What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is structuring content so featured snippets and voice assistants use it as the direct answer. How it works, how it differs from SEO, and what to fix.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so that answer engines — featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, knowledge panels and voice assistants — lift it as the direct answer to a question. Instead of earning a click on a blue link, the goal is to be the answer itself.

Common answer engines include:

  • Featured snippets — the answer box above the regular Google results.
  • People Also Ask — expandable related questions, each answered by a quoted passage.
  • Voice assistants — Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant read out a single answer.
  • AI overviews and chat answers — where AEO overlaps with generative engine optimization.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO gets a page ranked in a list of results; AEO gets a specific passage chosen as the single answer. SEO leans on crawlability, relevance and links. AEO adds format: a clear question, a short self-contained answer directly beneath it, and structured data that labels the question and answer for machines.

What does an answer engine look for?

Answer engines favor pages that ask the question in plain words, answer it in roughly 40 to 60 words right below, and then expand with lists, steps or tables. They also reward clear page structure, schema.org markup, and a page that is already trusted and ranking for the query.

A pattern that works

  1. Use the real question as an H2 or H3 heading, the way people type or say it.
  2. Answer it completely in the first paragraph below the heading, in about 40–60 words.
  3. Follow with detail: steps as an ordered list, comparisons as a table, options as bullets.
  4. Mark up the question and answer with FAQPage structured data.

Does FAQ schema still matter?

Yes, but for understanding rather than display. Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites, and HowTo rich results were retired. FAQPage markup still labels which text is a question and which is its answer, but Google says AI Overviews need no special markup, so SeoGauge counts it as a small bonus (5 of 100 AEO points). Short answer paragraphs and lists matter more.

A minimal FAQPage block looks like this:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "Do you deliver?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Yes. We deliver within 10 miles, every day from 8am."
    }
  }]
}
</script>

How do I measure my AEO?

SeoGauge scores AEO from 0 to 100 using seven checks: answer paragraphs under section headings, a lead answer after the H1, lists or tables, any structured data, an AI review of how concise your answers are, question-style headings, and FAQ or HowTo schema. Each failed check comes with a fix ranked by points.

The weights and thresholds for each check are published in the scoring methodology.
