Frequently asked questions

Short answers about SEO, AEO, GEO and how SeoGauge measures them.

What is SeoGauge?

SeoGauge assesses readiness for search engines (SEO), direct answers (AEO), and AI discovery (GEO). Free reports include SEO/AEO scores and basic checks. Pro unlocks GEO and priority recommendations. Scores assess website signals rather than actual rankings or citations; connected projects can show measured Google Search Console performance.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO helps a page rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps it become the direct answer in featured snippets and voice results. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps AI assistants read, trust and cite it. Many fixes overlap, but each channel rewards slightly different signals.

How is the SeoGauge score calculated?

Each page check has a weight and earns full, half or zero points. Category scores reflect the measured weighted checks. The Pro overall page score averages SEO, AEO and GEO. Free reports show an SEO/AEO overview that averages only those two categories. Domain ratings also use sampled pages and site-wide signals; see the methodology for details.

Is SeoGauge free?

Free includes SEO/AEO scores, basic checks, and available fixes. Anyone can run 5 page checks a day; free Google sign-in adds 20 page checks, 3 domain ratings, saved reports, and projects. Pro is $10 USD/month with 25% off: pay $7.50 USD/month for GEO, priority fixes, AI insights, comparisons, and search opportunities. Both plans use daily scan allowances. Cached results can be refreshed after changes.

How long does a scan take?

Most scans finish in 15 to 50 seconds. The slowest step is measuring Core Web Vitals through Google PageSpeed Insights, which loads your page on a simulated mobile device; if it takes longer than about 35 seconds, the report is shown without page speed. The robots.txt, sitemap, structured data and llms.txt checks take only a few seconds.

Which AI crawlers does SeoGauge check?

SeoGauge reads your robots.txt and checks seven AI crawlers: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User from OpenAI, ClaudeBot from Anthropic, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot from Common Crawl. Blocking the first five has the biggest impact on whether AI assistants can cite you.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of your site that summarizes who you are and links to your most important pages, written for language models. It is a young, voluntary standard: Google says it ignores llms.txt and no major AI crawler has confirmed reading it, though some agent browsers check it. It is cheap to add, so SeoGauge gives it a small weight (5 of 100 GEO points).

How can I improve my GEO score?

Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, state clearly who you are and what you offer near the top of the page, and include specific, verifiable facts such as numbers, dates and prices, attributed quotations and links to your sources. Server-render your main content so crawlers that skip JavaScript can still read it.
